Rattlesnake Resources has developed a world-class natural gas
exploration play in the Columbia River Basin of Washington
State. Over 400,000 acres of leases have been acquired over
anticlines that are among the largest prospective structures
for the entrapment of natural gas remaining in North America.
Reserve estimates of over 15 TCF of natural gas are postulated.
The basin is underlain by up to 12000 feet of Miocene aged
basalt. Beneath the basalt there is estimated to be more than
20,000 feet of organic rich sedimentary rocks ranging in age
from Late Cretaceous to Oligocene. Rich Cretaceous marine shales
outcrop on the flank of the Blue Mountains. Early Tertiary
rocks are primarily lacustrine to paludal sediments, which
include coal beds. Drilling in the 1980's by Shell Oil demonstrated
a sub-basalt Tertiary gas generative sedimentary basin. One
well, the BN 1-9, tested combined rates of up to 5.7 mmcfd.
The play is located in the Yakima Fold Belt of the Columbia
Basin. The prospects are based on anticlines, which owing to
the resistance of the basalt on the surface have been simply
preserved as topographic ridges. Three anticlines have been
leased:
Rattlesnake Hills
Saddle Mountain
Horse Heaven Hills
A shallow basalt play and a deeper sub-basalt play are presented.
